What's it all about?
For the month of June, we are calling on everyone to help us bring laughter back into the life of a child living with a serious illness. At Barretstown we are all about Serious Fun. Laughter is such an important part of childhood, but a serious childhood illness often means there is no laughter for months, and sometimes years. In the words of our founder, Paul Newman “healing doesn’t just happen in hospitals and laughter may very well be the best medicine.`` Laughter has always been a hugely important part of camp and the Barretstown programme of Therapeutic Recreation.
Get In TouchMeet Callum
In April of last year at the age of 10, Callum Duggan from Longford was diagnosed with Stage 4 Burkitts Lymphoma (large stomach tumour). Due to the very severe nature of this type of cancer and its level of progression Callum immediately started intensive chemotherapy. For the following 6 months Callum underwent gruelling treatment which saw him spend almost the entire 6 months in hospital. The sound of laughter was gone from Callum’s home, but coming to Barretstown at the end of his treatment helped him, and his family, to find their laughter again and begin to rebuild their lives.
Laugh@Lunch and LateLaughs
Can you help us raise funds and awareness of the Laughter campaign with your staff and/or customers? Why not invite your staff to find their laughter with a Laugh@Lunch or LateLaughs event/series of events during the month of June. Bring laughter into your office to brighten your staff’s day and reinforce the importance of laughter in life, and the impact of lost laughter in childhood. We will have some great short videos about laughter you could share on your social media, and posters you could place for your staff or customers to see! Here are some other easy ideas to roll out - but anything goes!
Laughter IdeasCorporate Partnership
There are a number of opportunities for corporate partners to come on board and support the campaign. Depending on the level of support, your branding could be included in elements of the campaign collateral which would offer a great platform to build brand awareness and show your public support for Barretstown.
The link below shows just some of the ways your brand can be aligned with the power of laughter for children recovering from cancer and serious illness.
